At Mt. Olive Pickles we like to shake things up every once in a while with our recipes. You can now find our famous Bread & Butter Chips with Sea Salt! You still get that tangy, crunchy, sweet flavor, chips in every jar, but not you can now get it made with sea salt, instead of regular salt.
We have to say that our bread and butter pickles are a favorite among our customers, almost as popular as our famous dill pickles. We did not want to change anything too much with our beloved bread and butter pickles, but we did want to give our customers choices.
A Little Pickle History
Bread and butter pickles became a family meal staple in the 1920’s. The sweet and sour taste finds its roots in Illinois where a pickle farmer started making them for her family. The flavor caught on and as they say the rest is pickle history.
At Mt. Olive Pickles we perfected that bread butter recipe to create the zesty chips your family loves today. One of the questions we often get asked is why are our Bread & Butter Chips with Sea Salt called bread and butter pickles?
We can tell you that no one has ever accused our Bread & Butter Chips with Sea Salt of ever tasting buttery, and there is absolutely no butter or bread for that matter in the recipe. You will not see evidence of either floating around in the pickle juice.
The legend behind the name is that during the great depression when things were tough, people did not eat a dill pickle sandwiched between two slices of bread with butter, they ate these perfectly sweet and tangy pickles as a sandwich. Hence the name Bread & Butter Pickles.
How Do We Do It?
We take the freshest cukes we can find (most come from right in our own neighborhood in North Carolina), then we work our pickle recipe magic. A few teaspoons of fresh ingredients like turmeric, real granulated sugar, red pepper flakes, mustard seed, celery seed, sweet onion, dill seed and other delicious ingredients make up the brine that our cucumbers ferment in.
Once they have reached flavor-packed perfection through fermenting we slice them into perfect sized chips that slide wonderfully onto a sandwich, on a burger, or right into your mouth for snacking.
So Why Did We Change Things?
We are still making our Bread & Butter Chips the same way we always have, we just took out the table salt and added sea salt in its place. We still deliver that homemade pickles taste and use the ingredients that you would use if you had the time to make your own.
Nothing has changed. Our Bread & Butter Chips with Sea Salt are still gluten-free, fat-free, low calorie, and the perfect balance between sweet pickles and dill pickles. We just like to give our customers choices when it comes to their pickle options.
