Many people wonder, why are they called ‘bread and butter pickles’? While there is no definitive answer, we pose two possibilities: One dates back to the Great Depression era because pickles were an affordable staple to have on hand in many households. People would make sandwiches out of these pickled cucumbers, adding butter to the bread, to stay on budget. Another has a Swedish angle: the smorgasbord, which we think of as a big buffet here in the US, refers to a “bread & butter table” – the Swedish buffet table of different breads, butter, and pickled items. So, take your pick.

How We Make Bread and Butter Pickles
Making pickles is what we do, and there’s a method to the pickle madness. For the pickling process, Mt. Olive uses pickling cucumbers rather than the long green types of cucumbers you find in the produce section of your grocery store. These cucumbers are selected based on their size, the thickness of their skin, freshness, and other factors to ensure we can deliver only the highest quality and best-tasting products to our customers. The pickling cucumbers are harvested when they are just the right size so all the pickles in the jar are as uniform as possible. Once we cut the fresh cucumbers, we add the spices to the jars, the cucumbers, and then the cover brine, or pickle juice, that includes vinegar and other flavors and ingredients. Finally, it’s pasteurized to just the right temperature and quickly cooled. This makes the product shelf-stable.
Mt. Olive Bread & Butter Pickles add both a sweet and zesty flavor to your recipes. Their crunchy texture can make salads, sandwiches, and other recipes that much more satisfying, and just having a couple of sweet pickles will leave you craving more. These pickle chips are perfect for stuffing sandwiches, adding to hamburgers, or enjoying as a side to your favorite dishes. You can even pour over a splash of pickle juice on your favorite side dishes and appetizers for an extra dash of flavor.
For nearly a century, Mt. Olive has been known as the country’s favorite brand for fresh dill pickles, pickled peppers, and flavorful pickle relishes.
